The McKern Steel story: A legacy of excellence and community impact

More news

McKern Steel, a distinguished name in the steel fabrication industry, boasts a storied background of success that spans over half a century.

The company’s roots can be traced back to 1969 when Gordon McKern, an enterprising builder with a passion for business, founded a small business in Heidelberg, Melbourne supplying hardware items to the building industry. From the outset, the business thrived on a commitment to delivering top-notch products and offering exceptional customer service.

In 1976, as part of a government-led initiative to foster regional growth, McKern Steel made a momentous decision to relocate its operations to Bendigo, setting up shop in the vibrant borough of Eaglehawk. Initially focused on catering to the hardware needs of the community, the company underwent a transformative phase in 1992 when Gordon McKern passed the baton to his son, Michael. With a clear vision and unwavering determination, Michael steered McKern Steel towards a new trajectory, emerging as leading provider of structural steel fabrication services.

Deeply-rooted family values

What sets McKern Steel apart is not only its outstanding track record but also its deeply rooted family values. As a testament to this legacy, two of Michael’s children, Emma and Joe, have actively joined the business, carrying forward the family’s dedication and commitment to excellence.

With the combined expertise of the McKern family and the entire team, McKern Steel continues to evolve and adapt, upholding its tradition of delivering exceptional steel fabrication services. Today, the company stands as a shining example of how a family-run business, fueled by passion and determination, can leave an indelible mark on an industry, while laying the groundwork for an even brighter future.

The McKern Foundation

Beyond its business triumphs, McKern Steel’s narrative includes a compelling aspect of community impact through the McKern Foundation, established in 2015. Going beyond mere corporate social responsibility, the foundation stands as a registered charity with DGR status, embodying Michael McKern’s strong belief in investing in the youth of today to shape a brighter and more positive future.

Allocating a substantial dedicated annual budget, the McKern Foundation actively supports programs that contribute to the overall health, well-being, and growth of children and their families. The Foundation’s largest program is the supplying of fresh fruit to over 30 schools and kindergartens in the local area with the purpose of encouraging healthy eating habits for the next generation. This program has been a huge part of the community for over 8 years and is supported by local businesses such as BlueScope Steel, J L King & Co, Instant Steel Solutions, Furphy Galvanizing, Impact-A Fasteners and Adroit Insurance.

Moreover, the foundation puts emphasis on initiatives that promote healthy habits and foster recreational activities for children, recognising the vital role they play in shaping well-rounded individuals. By focusing on these key areas, the McKern Foundation aims to uplift and empower the younger generation, ultimately benefitting the entire community.

Through this powerful synergy of business success and genuine philanthropy, McKern Steel’s impact extends far beyond the realm of steel fabrication. It continues to make a profound and positive difference in the lives of countless children and families, leaving a legacy of compassion, care, and community enrichment.

Supporting Bendigo Health

Collaborating closely with the Bendigo Health Foundation, Michael is dedicated to enriching the health and well-being of the Bendigo community. One of the foundation’s latest initiatives includes organising a charity house in partnership with Metricon Homes, with proceeds set to further bolster the Bendigo Health Foundation’s vital work. This project showcases Michael’s commitment to ensuring Bendigo has access to top-notch healthcare resources and facilities.

The McKern Foundation has been a long-term supporter of Bendigo Health, actively contributing to the acquisition of specialised medical equipment. These advancements have enabled more treatments to be available closer to home for the community, saving valuable time and effort for patients and their families.

In recognition of their significant contribution, the new Bendigo Hospital Appeal has honoured the McKern Foundation’s generosity through a dedication plaque in the hospital’s main atrium.

The McKern Playground

Additionally, the Foundation’s support has led to the naming of the McKern Playground, a heartwarming tribute adjacent to the Children’s ward. The funds raised through the appeal have been instrumental in acquiring state-of-the-art medical technologies. Notably, a new Pharmacy Robot and a second Cath Lab have been procured, furthering the technological advancements at Bendigo Hospital, and enhancing regional healthcare services.

Beyond healthcare, the McKern Foundation remains committed to promoting mental health in the Loddon Mallee region. Their steadfast annual sponsorship of the Move for Mental Health Challenge continues to raise essential funds for mental health patients, improving access to crucial services and support.

Michael looks forward to continuing to support these important initiatives in the local community.
